Book Recommendation

January 1946: writer Juliet Ashton receives a letter from a stranger, a founding member of the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. And so begins a remarkable tale of the island of Guernsey during the German occupation, and of a society as extraordinary as its name.

I loved this heartwarming book enough to add it to my extremely choosy book list. I enjoy lots of books but only list the ones that really stay with me. I'm always on the lookout for a recommendation so if you've read something that just has to be read let me know!

I fell across the work of Kirsten Lepore and immediately fell in love with her quirky and imaginative animations. You can really sense the amount of love and effort that have gone into each one. Just check out the amount of drawings she must have done for 'story for North America'. In 'Sweet Dreams' a young cupcake dreams of sailing the oceans with healthy consequences. The details are just brilliant, my favourite has to be the shipwrecked scene; when the cupcake (spoiler alert!) builds a shelter on the desert island he picks some foliage to make his roof. Come morning the cale has shriveled in the sun but the growing cale has not. It might seem like a small thing but it is these tiny details that bring the story to life.

In the summer of 1902 Ivan Yakovlevich Bilibin (1876 - 1942) the well known artist, stage designer and illustrator of Russian Folk Tales traveled to the Vologda Province in the North of Russia. As well as collecting and studying the local folk art he drew and photographed the wooden architecture. Many of the photographs taken on these trips were used as illustrations in Bilibin's article of 1904 in the World of Art Magazine entitled Folk Art of the Russian North. The article drew attention to the condition of the wooden churches:

"the state of the churches is most lamentable. In the hands of uncivilized people, they are being vandalised to the point of destruction or are ruined with 'restoration' to the point of being unrecognisable".

Seeing these beautiful postcards inspired Richard Davies to travel to the Russian North in 2002 to find out which churches had survived. Further trips have followed every year. Many churches have been lost: some have been left to rot; some have been destroyed by lightning; countless others by ignorance, spite and neglect. Last year, one church was hit by a reversing tractor - it tumbled like a pack of cards.

Many churches have been saved by dedicated specialists and enthusiasts, whose untiring work goes on. Hopefully the photographs in this exhibition will help raise public awareness of the plight of these wonderful buildings and that more restoration projects will attract the funding they deserve.

What all these kitchens have in common is a lovely simplicity. It's often the best way and also shows off your key cute accessories to their best. In this case I just love the wooden doors on the base cabinets and the white above. Because the walls are also white they just disappear and create a feeling of space in a kitchen that could have felt very corridor like.

everything in this kitchen is kept to very simple flat clean lines, it works really well and would easily take some softer accessories without losing the look.

You'd have to be very tidy to have this sort of open shelving but it does look gorgeous!

This must be the ultimate takeouters kitchen because they obviously don't need a highly practical kitchen, the teenist sink and a 2 hob burner. Multiply this kitchen by two and I would be more keen, it looks nice though!

love this low level kitchen with the window above and the drawer cut outs are perfect

the matching floor and cupboards with a very simple worktop extending to the splash back works great and the chandlier just tops it off nicely.

again not the most practical of kitchens but lets ignore that and just gaze lovingly at it

pretty in pink and I want that sink complete with cute gold taps

It's so hard to find nice lighting that doesn't cost the earth. I really love this piece but it must be a bomb, it doesn't even list the price on the website...

this one's not bad, nowhere near as nice as the first though and still pretty expensivo for such a simple shape

I have got a penchant for the flowerpot light and I'm so used to seeing it in orange it's quite a novelty in stainless steel

the bubble light by George Nelsen is a real classic and would easily fit anywhere but I'm just not sure you get enough bang for your buck?

so I've been having a little treasure hunt today

first I spotted this polish mobile on wren handmade and was immediately intrigued...

...which led me to this, it seems it's called a Pajak/Pajaki - a mobile of paper, straw and yarn

and these two which are described as a spider of straw - cool name
only downside is they are really quite pricey...

then I found these hot tea glasses which are actually rather sweet (just imagine them sitting on a lovely vintage wooden dining table or a clean white tablecloth)

and these colourful coasters

and this slightly bizarre but weirdly cool poster

so lets all go shopping in Poland, it looks fun!

Liking the idea of recycling by buying vintage wares, Alyson Fox decided to bring that same sensibility to new clothing. By using sustainable fabric, no zippers, organic elastic and buttons made from fallen tree branches, Alyson has created a clothing line that can be truly called eco-friendly.

Relying on her unique artistic skills behind a camera and on paper, here each design springs from the desire to tell a story in a thoughtful way.

Caitlin Mociun
Artist and Designer

With a B.A from the Rhode Island School of Design, Caitlin Mociun cites the German Bauhaus school as inspiration for her art-meets-craft work, including her Bauhaus-inspired prints.

"I've always liked making things, so instead of making art that would sit on a shelf, I decided to make clothing and textiles." Mociun admits the artist's way still draws her, something that's abundantly clear in her graphic printed dresses. "I still get to draw and play around with sculptural forms, so I'm pretty happy."
